A change of direction - From Nikon to Sony
After three incredible years of shooting with the Nikon D750, I’ve officially made the switch to the Sony A7III, and I couldn’t be more excited about what’s to come. My D750 has been with me on countless adventures—skiing in the breathtaking French Alps, kayaking through the rugged beauty of the Ardèche, and documenting the love stories of couples across France. But now, as I plan new projects, including trips to the U.S. and Canada, I’ve chosen to embrace the Sony A7III. Its lightweight design and advanced features are exactly what I need for the next chapter in my photography journey.
Nikon D750: A Trusted Companion for 3 Years
Before I dive into why I switched, I have to give credit to the D750. It’s been an outstanding camera and has never let me down, no matter where I took it.
Skiing in the French Alps
Capturing the energy and motion of skiers as they cut through fresh powder was always thrilling, and the D750 handled the snowy, often harsh conditions with ease. Its weather sealing and superb autofocus system allowed me to shoot crisp, sharp action shots, whether I was at the summit or weaving through trees at high speed.
Kayaking in the Ardèche
The raw beauty of the Ardèche mountain region, with its cliffs, winding rivers, and secluded valleys, made for some unforgettable photography. The D750’s dynamic range helped me capture the contrast between dark shadowy canyons and the bright skies above. Even while balancing in a kayak, the camera’s reliable performance helped me focus on the moment without worrying about my gear.
Hiking in the Calanques National Park
The steep limestone cliffs, hidden coves, and turquoise waters of Calanques National Park offered endless inspiration. Hiking with the D750 strapped to my back, I loved how its full-frame sensor captured the dramatic landscapes in stunning detail. Its robust build could withstand the rougher terrain, and its dynamic range helped me shoot both bright coastal views and shadowy crevices in the cliffs.
Weddings Across France
One of the D750’s strengths was in capturing those intimate, fleeting moments during weddings. Its full-frame sensor allowed for incredible depth and detail in portraits, and its low-light capabilities helped me create beautiful images in dimly lit receptions. From rural chateaus to coastal ceremonies, the Nikon D750 captured each couple’s story with elegance and precision.
Why I Chose the Sony A7III
So, why the switch after such an amazing run with Nikon? The answer lies in what I need for the future—and that’s where the Sony A7III excels.
Lightweight and Compact
As much as I loved the D750, it’s not a lightweight camera. Carrying it around during long shoots or hikes in the mountains became a bit of a challenge, especially with a full kit of lenses. The Sony A7III, being a mirrorless system, is significantly lighter and more compact. With upcoming travel plans to the U.S. and a seasonal adventure in Canada, having a camera that is both powerful and easy to carry is a huge benefit.
Improved Autofocus
One of the first things I noticed about the A7III is its lightning-fast autofocus. With 693 phase-detection points and eye-tracking technology, this camera excels at locking onto subjects, even in challenging conditions. Whether it’s capturing a skier in motion or a candid moment at a wedding, I know the A7III will perform beyond expectations.
Hybrid Photo and Video Capabilities: I’ve always focused on photography, but the Sony A7III’s strong video capabilities have me excited to explore more videography. The ability to shoot 4K video with smooth autofocus is perfect for capturing dynamic moments during weddings or adventure shoots. With travel ahead, I’m eager to expand my skill set and document more of my experiences in motion, whether that’s the rush of a river in Canada or the lively streets of New York City.
Versatile for Travel: As I prepare for new travels to the U.S. and Canada, the Sony A7III feels like the perfect companion. Its compact design makes it easier to pack and carry while on the go, whether I’m navigating the streets of a bustling city or hiking through the Canadian wilderness. The A7III’s in-body stabilization will help me capture steady shots even when I’m moving, and its weather sealing means I won’t have to worry about tough conditions in the mountains or snow.
What’s Next: New Adventures with the Sony A7III
As I look ahead, I’m filled with anticipation for the new projects and adventures the Sony A7III will be part of. Here’s what’s on the horizon:
Traveling to the U.S.: With plans to explore some iconic American landscapes, from the deserts of Arizona to the bustling streets of New York City, I can’t wait to put the A7III through its paces. Its versatility will allow me to shoot stunning landscapes and urban scenes with ease, and the lighter weight means I can explore more without feeling weighed down by gear.
A Winter Adventure in Canada: I’m particularly excited about this one. With Canada’s breathtaking winter landscapes, the Sony A7III will be the perfect companion for capturing snowy forests, frozen lakes, and perhaps even some wildlife. The camera’s weather sealing and battery performance in cold conditions will be put to the test, but I’m confident it will shine.
New Elopement Projects: I have several weddings lined up for the coming year, and I’m eager to see how the A7III handles the fast-paced, emotion-filled environment of a wedding day. The eye autofocus, in particular, will be a game changer for capturing those intimate moments between couples. Its video capabilities will also allow me to expand my offering, providing both high-quality stills and cinematic video for my clients.
Conclusion: A New Chapter with Sony
Leaving behind the Nikon D750 wasn’t an easy decision—it’s been a reliable, sturdy companion through so many important moments. But as my photography style evolves and I take on new challenges, the Sony A7III feels like the perfect tool to help me capture the next set of memories. Its lighter weight, superior autofocus, and enhanced video capabilities make it a worthy successor as I embark on new adventures in the U.S., Canada, and beyond.
I can’t wait to see where this camera takes me—and the stories it helps me tell.
